The Ichiyo School of Ikebana was founded in 1937 by a brother and sister, Meikof and Ichiyo Kasuya. Ichiyo means "one leaf". The goal was to create original Ikebana suitable for modern environments and international lifestyles. They focused on two totally different types of arrangements: personal surroundings and public spaces, and varied from traditional Japanese tokonoma to Western tables and from stage settings to hotel lobbies.
Akihiro Kasuya, son of the late Meikof Kasuya who was the second Iemoto (headmaster), assumed the role of third Iemoto in 1983. He has continued in the path his father made famous, the creation of new ideas. He has participated in a broad range of ikebana exhibitions and conducted exciting ikebana demonstrations worldwide, travelling extensively to promote and teach ikebana. His demonstration at the 1991 Ikebana International World Convention received a standing ovation from the 700 attending members of all schools of ikebana. He is the author of two books of Ikebana, Flower Expressions and Ikebana Ichiyo School .
